Hindu Temples in India

The Temples in India can be mainly divided into two categories, which are the Northern and Southern. This is according to the structure that is followed in the temple in the form of a shikhara. The shikhara in the temples is the top structures that are right above the sacred sanctum. On the other hand, the northern temples out of which the golden temple is extremely famous, usually has a tower and a strong sturdy broad base.

There are several different kinds of temples in India. The Birla temple is considered to be a classic example of a city temple. It is the city temple that is made in the honor of the gods Lakhshmi, who is the goddess of wealth and her consort Narayana. The first Birla city temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in the year 1938.

In general there are several different kinds of Hindu temples with different styles of architecture to it. These temples also denote the medieval culture of the country and the secular nature. Therefore, you will find a Buddhist temple and a Hindu temple side by side, religiously presiding in great harmony.

There are several famous India temples, and if you were to go anywhere in India you will find a few of them. A Temple is considered to be a sacrosanct place and people of all religious are welcomed into its pristine and peaceful surroundings.

The temple depicts to people the growth of Hinduism throughout the country and its spread.

There are several extremely rich temples in India and one of them is the golden temple. This is situated in Amritsar and attracts Sikhs from not only all over India but also the entire world. The golden temple is open not only to the Sikhs and but people of all other religions are allowed within its precincts.

Compared to these grand temples the Buddhist temples are extremely simple and devoid of any decoration. All that they have been adorning them are the inscriptions.

A few other very famous temples are the Tirupati Balaji Temple in Andhra Pradesh. This temple attracts hordes of pilgrims every day throughout the year. Amongst India's temples, it is considered to be one of the richest of temples.

The temple of Vaishno Devi is situated right in the midst of the Himalaya at a height of 5,300 feet. Out of all the temples, this one is situated at the highest height and is the most difficult to reach. If you want to visit the deity that is Mata Vaishno Devi then you need to climb right up to a hill top in order to be able to do so.

The other Hindu temples are the Gurvayoor temple which is situated in Thriussar in Kerala. The deity worshiped here is Lord Krishna. This is the same idol that lord Brahma worshiped when he was in Dwarka, so is it believed by the people. The temple has great healing potential and allows a person to have peace and harmony in life.

The Buddhist temples are mostly located in Orissa and Madhya Pradesh. They are in the form of sacred stupas and many of them have been able to withstand the ravages of time wonderfully. Although they were built several years ago they still remain as they were. The stone carvings, statues of the Buddha and the inscriptions make them worthy of a visit.

Another India temple is the Sabarimala temple. This is situated in the Western Ghats and is an important temple and shrine that attract hordes of devotees every year. The temple is for the worship of the deity Lord Ayyapan, who is worshiped throughout India.

There are a few temples that have become world heritage sites. The sun temple at Konark is one such temple. It is built in the memory of the sun god and is an extremely popular destination for people to visit when in Orissa.

The different kinds of temples that are found in India right from the golden temple to the city temple are all examples of the various kinds of architectural details, grandeur and splendor along with the magnificence of those times when the Hindu temples were built.

Although the Buddhist temples were built during the same time, their starkness and simplicity are in sharp contrast to what you find in the other India temples.

The temples up north had a distinctive feature and therefore, their temples were more ornamental in style. The most famous are the Khajuraho temples. Then when you move to the western regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan you find the style move to another kind wherein you find no columns used and the carvings are richer with the most wonderfully carved marble ceilings with pendants. In this region, the use of marble in the temples is predominantly found. The best example that can be cited of this kind of temple is the Mt. Abu in Rajasthan.
