Sikh Gurus

There are ten human Sikh Gurus and the eleventh one is considered to be the holy book of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib. The message that was passed to the followers by Guru Nanak was simple and easy to follow. It was the universal truth and based on the following of one God. Guru Nanak did not preach dogmas but rather other human traits such as compassion, humility, kindness and honesty. The belief is that the soul of Guru Nanak was passed on to the other nine gurus and that’s why each of them had a little bit of his divinity and religious zeal in them.

Guru Gobind Singh was the tenth and the last guru. After the death of his father, he was able to organize the Sikhs into a community of soldiers and thereby formed them into the khalsa. This was a great event in the history of Sikhism. After the death of the guru, Guru Gobind Singh, the ownership of the guru fell on the Guru Granth sahib the sacred text of the Sikhs.

Guru Gobind Singh was the first guru to be able to bring all the Sikh youth together and make them form a force that was a force to reckon with. This was the real defining movement in the history of the religion. The guru was able to make the Khalsa army fight against the mighty mughal army and come out victorious. Although the guru had to face a lot of personal hardships during this time he still continued to fight relentlessly in the pursuit of righteousness. This was why the Khalsa army was able to withstand the mighty enemy.

Guru Granth sahib was written in the final stages by the guru just before his death in the year 1708. Before he died, he added the sayings of the Guru Tegh Bahadur to the other Sikh scriptures.

That was how the Guru Granth sahib was changed and reworked into its final revised version. The Guru Granth sahib is considered to be the final verdict on the Sikh religion and anything pertaining with it.

Japji sahib is an extremely powerful sikh prayer, and it consists of 38 hymns and a final composition right at the end of it. The Japji sahib has the Mool Mantra at the beginning. The Japji sahib is right at the beginning of the Granth Sahib and is considered to be an extremely important verse. The word is derived from the word ‘jap’ which means to recite or chant and the word ‘ji’ denotes respect. The ji could also be a reference to the soul.

The Japji sahib is extremely important in the Sikh religion because it was put together by Guru Nanak himself and was the foremost in the creation of the faith of Sikhism. This is the universal song that has been composed by Guru Nanak in praise of the One God that he preached about all throughout his life. The Japji sahib when chanted often opens one’s soul.
