The guru granth sahib is also known as the Adi Granth. The guru granth sahib ji is the holy book of the Sikhs. The Guru Granth Sahib was passed down from one guru to another. The Sri Guru Granth sahib is also considered to be the last and the most important of the Sikh gurus. Because of all these factors, the guru granth sahib is greatly revered and worshiped by Sikhs all over the globe.

The guru granth sahib consists of many hymns that have been put together and 1430 angs. These have been put into pages. It was compiled and put together during the time of the Sikh Gurus, who lived from 1469 to 1708.

What you will find in the guru granth sahib ji are the wordings of all the wise gurus and whatever they wanted passed down to their Sikh disciples. The last of the Sikh gurus, Guru Gobind Singh who lived from 1666 to 1708, and who was the tenth of the Sikh Gurus, informed that the sacred and holy text Sri Guru Granth sahib as his successor. This meant that after that, there would be no more human Gurus. This also meant that the text to be found in the Guru Granth Sahib was considered to be extremely important. Thereafter, the guru granth sahib text remained the holy book of the Sikhs.

The guru granth sahib was regarded and came to be worshiped with respect as the living part of the Ten Gurus. The role of Guru Granth Sahib was to be an extremely important one as it was meant to guide and show the right path and also be the guide of prayer for the Sikhs all over the world.

Guru Granth sahib ji is the important key in worship in Sikhism and no Gurdwara or worship without the Sri Guru Granth sahib holding center stage to it.

The guru granth sahib was first compiled and put together by the fifth Sikh guru who was called Guru Arjan Dev. He lived from the years 1563 to 1606. The Guru Granth sahib was first put together in the form of hymns that were got from the hymns that were recited by the first five Sikh gurus. These hymns and sayings were also got from all the other great saints that lived during those times. This did not only mean people of Sikh faith but also included the famous Hindu and Muslim saints of those times.

After the death of the tenth Sikh guru, many handwritten copies of the Guru Granth sahib ji were prepared for distribution by Baba Deep Singh.

The first time that the Sri Guru Granth sahib came about it was written in the Gurmukhi script. This was an older form of Punjabi and there were some other languages used along with it too.

The Sikhs consider the Siri Guru Granth Sahib to be a spiritual guide for all of them and can be used for several generations without any changes made to it.

The guru granth sahib plays a crucial part in showing the right path to the Sikhs' way of life and the way they conduct their day to day lives. The guru granth sahib plays such an important part in the Sikh devotional life. There are only two main rules and two fundamental principles. The first one is that the text in the guru granth sahib is holy and divine and a revelation of the God above. Also, that the guru granth sahib has all the answers regarding religion and morality hidden in its pages.

The guru granth sahib is made up of teachings of all kinds. All of these are known as the Gurbani. The Gurbani can be translated to mean the Word of the guru and sometimes Dhur ki bani which mean the Word of God.

The work of converting the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev into a book, commenced during his lifetime. Guru Nanak Dev, who was the very the first guru and founder of Sikhism started the guru granth sahib. Guru Angad who was the second guru of Sikhs collected all of the Guru’s collection of songs and words in the form of a manuscript. Then, he added sixty-three of his own compositions to the guru granth sahib.

The third guru called Guru Amar Das put together a number of manuscripts and added 974 of his own compositions and other various Bhagats. This is how each of the Gurus added something further to the guru granth sahib, and it came about in the shape it is in today.
